What Should You Do If You Experience Water Or Fire Damage?

GENERAL INFORMATION:

1. Don't throw anything away, until you've been advised by someone from your insurance company, and then allow an experienced restoration company to remove it from your premises.

2. Don't tamper with the electrical service if there is water in the structure, either from a fire or water damage (broken pipe, etc.)

WATER DAMAGE DO'S:

1. Remove as much standing water as possible by blotting and mopping.

2. Start a fan & dehumidifier if you have one.

3. Turn on A/C if summertime.

4. Turn heat to 75 degree if winter.

5. Remove or prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying.

6. Wipe excess water from wood furniture.

7. Put tin foil or saucers under legs of furniture to prevent carpet stains.

8. Remove valuable paintings and art to a safe place.

9. Open drawers and cabinets for complete drying.

10. Remove shoes and leather goods to dry area.

WATER DAMAGE DON'T:

1. Don't attempt to use electrical appliances close to the damage.

2. Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if water came through ceilings.

3. Stay out of rooms if wet ceilings are sagging from retained water.

4. Don't leave wet fabrics or furs in place, move them to dry (in another room), at room temperature.

5. Don't leave books, magazines or colored items on wet carpets.

6. Don't use TVs, computers or appliances while standing on wet floors or carpets.

FIRE DAMAGE DO'S:

1. Limit the movement in the home to prevent soot from being impregnated into upholstery, walls, and woodwork. 

2. Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers.

3. Change furnaces filters immediately.

4.. Cover upholstery (if not wet) with sheets.

5. If warm weather, open windows.

6. Empty freezer and refrigerator completely if electricity is off.

7. Wash plants with water on both sides of leaves (use water softener)

8. Remove pets from property.

FIRE DAMAGE DON'T:

1. Don't use TVs, stereos, computers, or electrical appliances until cleaned.

2. Don't use do-it-yourself home carpet or upholstery cleaners.

3. Don't attempt to put water to soot or fire damaged walls or woodwork.

4. Don't use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been near damaged areas (they may be contaminated).

5. Don't send garments to an ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor.

VANDALISM DAMAGE DO'S:

1. Hose down or wash egg damage from building exterior as soon as possible.

2. Clean up freshly spilled food from carpets and fabric with a damp cloth or sponge (don't overwet)

3. Vacuum glass particles from carpets and upholstery, with care.

4. Save cans and containers which will reveal the composition of spilled inks, cosmetics, and paints.

VANDALISM DAMAGE DON'T:

1. Don't attempt to remove ink, paint, or cosmetic stains.

2. Don't throw out wood chips, broken pieces from furniture, porcelain, or other art objects.
